Community Case Study - Art in the City

Big Art - Emma and Lucy paint the Cherry trees

‘Art in the City', is Truro's annual visual arts festival that draws together arts based businesses in Truro. It is funded by Totally Truro, the organisation delivering Truro's Business Improvement District (BID), and we are responsible for co-ordinating the various elements of the event. We work in partnership with Totally Truro to ensure the events meet the aims and objectives outlined by the BID.

The festival involves open spaces and galleries across the city of Truro. The purpose of the festival is to create a series of events that make art accessible to the community; that celebrate existing artists and galleries within Truro and that opens up opportunities for new artists; thereby attracting additional visitors to the city.

There are 3 key elements to Art in the City which embody the theme of the event - "a community creating" - and these elements include Big Art, an Art Competition and an Art Fair.

We place large canvases around Truro for the Big Art event, matching artists with each location, and asking them to paint their view of Truro. The art work created is always diverse, and the artists are only given a day to paint their canvas. Following an exhibition, these large canvases are then sold at the Big Art auction, bringing together art lovers from around the county to purchase their very own piece of art work.

We have an ongoing relationship with Totally Truro co-ordinating Music Truro and the Christmas Truro entertainments, and have enjoyed delivering Art in the City in 2011 and 2012.
